Matthew State, MD, PhD
Chief Scientific Advisor
Dr. Matthew State is the ARIA Chief Scientific Advisor and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board. He is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, physician-scientist, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Director of the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at the University of California, San Francisco. Throughout his research career, his laboratory has made major contributions to the understanding of the causes of autism, Tourette’s disorder, and brain malformation syndromes. Dr. State obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees at Stanford University, completed his residency and fellowship at UCLA, and earned his PhD in genetics at Yale University. He was the Donald J Cohen Professor of Child Psychiatry, Psychiatry, and Genetics at Yale before moving to UCSF where he is the Oberndorf Family Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a recipient of the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize for Mental Health from that organization for his work on autism.
